Why do elbows need to be bevelled?

Elbows are common connections used in piping systems to change the direction of fluid. Beveling is the process of machining a bevelled surface on the end of an elbow to facilitate welding. Here are the main reasons why elbows need to be bevelled:

1. **Improvement of weld quality**
Turning bevelling can increase the welding contact area, make the weld stronger, reduce welding defects and improve the overall quality.

2. **Ensure connection strength**
The bevel design allows for better metal fusion during welding, enhancing the strength of the connection to withstand higher pressure and mechanical stress.

3. **Facilitates welding operations**
The bevel provides a better operating space for the welder, facilitates control of the welding process and ensures a uniform weld seam.

4. **Reduced stress concentration**
The bevel disperses welding stresses and reduces stress concentration, reducing the risk of cracking and failure.

5. **Conforms to standard requirements**
Many industry standards require that elbows bevel prior to welding to ensure safety and quality.
